North Jetty Capping Project
PLEASE NOTE: The US Army Corps of Engineers began additional work on the north jetty of Tillamook Bay on 1-16-22. Parking at Barview Jetty County Campground will be limited for the duration of the project. Updates on this project will be added soon.
Information on the Tillamook Bay North Jetty Capping Project of 2010 is below:
In 2010, the US Army Corps of Engineers placed approximately 1050 stones weighing 37,000 at the head of the north jetty of Tillamook Bay. Massive boulders from 25 to 50 tons each were carefully placed and capped to preserve the integrity of the jetty.
Project Scope:
The construction of North Jetty was intended to create a broader, higher and more substantial head feature to resist the relentless force of the ocean waves pounding the jetty head from the North, South and West. Essential elements of the construction included the solid seating of the toe stone, interlocking of the armor stone, and tying in the new jetty stone placed with the jetty trunk and the relic stone base. The repair was intended to center the new head over the broad, distributed existing relic stone base.
Between 10-22-2009 and 09-30-2010, five (5) days per week (Monday through Friday), several 9-axle lowboy big rigs, each hauling massive 25 to 50-ton stones, traveled through Barview Jetty County Campground to deliver their loads to the jetty. In June of 2010, Kiewit Corporation placed the boulders on the head of the North Jetty using a large crane that was handled with delicate precision.
Public access to the north jetty of Tillamook Bay was restricted from 05-01-2010 to 09-30-2010 by construction fencing to the north and west ends of the access road.
